CAPT JACK SPARROW MADE MORE SENSE!
BARBER SHOP QUARTET AT THE NAVAL ACADEMY....GOOD GRIEF!
CROWLEY WAS MAKING GREAT TIME...18 KNOTS...WHEN HE HIT THE MINE.
FLYER?
CREED
CAPTAIN COULD HAVE AVOIDED THE RUNAWAY TORPEDO WITH A QUICK DIVE!
The 50 cals mentioned as deck armament were one 4-inch/100mm by 50 caliber deck gun and two .30 caliber machine guns. Shown in the clip was a 40mm AA gun that equipped submarines later in the war.
This series was developed and shown during the late 1950s. It was made with the help of the DOD and the US Navy. The subject matter and episode might have been construed as detrimental to the service, so the names of the boat and crew were changed.
According to a Reference Book, "United States and Allied Submarine Successes in the Pacific and Far East During World War 2" by John D Alden & Craig R. McDonald, the Swordfish sunk one ship during this attack. It was the Myoken Maru, 4,124 tons. Even so this is a very good accomplishment because at this time there were 3 major defects in our torpedoes.
Petter Gunn
Good video. Thanks
Is that the “Professor?”
What is that non commissioned officer doing up in the control area giving the captain advice
made the mistakes of getting station in yokouka Japan navy base Japan the Japanese are totally stupid
Why didn’t we know about this? Iam so proud to be a American
He made a good captain
Hey Captain played in Twilight Zone The Silence he cut his own vocal cords because he couldn't trust himself being silent for a year
Brain dead Biden was Captain on one of these Subs😅😅
Where does a submarine store a wooden rowboat?
If you'd like to read more about what life was like for UK prisoners held by the Japanese in China, read: "Miracle on the River Kwai".
American promised Filipinos who helped fight the Japanese full military benefits. Filipinos are still fighting to get these benefits.
I enjoy these episodes of the Silent Service. I was very young back then. What I don't understand is why the Admiral never mentions the dropping of two atomic bombs on Japan that ended the war. ☮
The big problem back then was the batteries? How long would they last?
I have counted 4 different episodes when they used Deforest Kelly to play the commander. Seawolf was sunk in error with all hands by the Destroyer Escort USS Richard M. Rowell.
SERIES MAKES ME BELIEVE THAT CREW ERRORS SUNK MORE SUBS THAN THE ENEMY DID.
I watched this as a kid in 1970. Father was retired from that era, and I was a real patriotic air force brat! Now it's becoming ancient history, and all that served in that war are all but gone.😢 (RIP) I wish we could have held on to that once proud America.
From Wikipedia: On 23 November 2006, Thanksgiving Day in the United States, the wreck of Perch was unexpectedly located by an international team of divers aboard MV Empress while searching for the wreck of the British heavy cruiser HMS Exeter northwest of Bawean Island in the Java Sea. The expedition had hoped to locate and photograph the wreck of Exeter, sunk in the same area on 1 March 1942. The wreck of Perch was illegally salvaged sometime between 2006 and 2016 and no longer exists. Unlike the Dutch and British ships near her, which also were scavenged illegally, Perch was not a war grave, as she had been abandoned by her crew without fatalities.
Why do those rafts have to be White???? Geez Louise!
As an Australian, whose Father and Uncles served in WW2 in the Pacific, I really appreciate this Series. It's history and stories are very relatable for me and it brings home why my Mother would never hear a bad word said about the American Servicemen whcame to our aid during that dreadful time. Australia served from 1939 to 1945. Lest We Forget. 🇦🇺
Dennis Weaver, before he became a crippled cowboy.
Man, their periscope goes much higher than I thought. That scope hit nearly the same altitude as enemy planes.
I haven't found a source yet that said the Grayling disappeared on her 7th patrol. All sources indicate it was her 8th patrol. What's up with that? Anyone know?
WTF! Who won the championship checkers game?
As others here have said, I watched this show every Saturday morning for months on end. Other weekend favorites were science fiction and horror oriented. Those programs wouldn’t be worth my time now. These always will be.
One hard luck sub! But she was already 20+ years old when WW2 started, for the US. Luckily, she made it through the war.
We used to boresight our tank's main gun pretty much the same way the Thresher boresighted theirs. There's a more expedient way to do it, but maybe they didn't want to show that to the general public. I also wonder how the binoculars held on tightly enough to stay in position after each firing. Whatever they did, it worked.
Compare these men to today’s youth. Makes me very afraid of where our country is headed.
I love 😍 WW2 movies 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
7:24 shows the tracking apparatus...triangulation.
An officer is an educated man, he would never have said," me and Martian", it would have been, "Martian and I".
Look at the country now. The Democratic Party, of JFK (Ask not what your country can do for you but what can you do for your country) and the PT109, have turned their backs on the Jews of the world.
you missed the reason the germans no longergave a warning before sinking ships...it was WC an the use if Q ships
My absolute admiration goes out to all the men that served on these subs . Those guys must have had nerves of steel . They are all heroes to me .
Incredible story. As we say in the Navy, well done. ☮
I always have sympathy for those "special guests" as many obviously aren't too comfortable being on camera. Being in front of a retired Admiral and knowing this was going on TV must have been like, "Don't screw this up, don't screw this up..."
This is the second episode of Silent Service where Deforest Kelly plays the Commander. The other is Spearfish and he plays a different Commander.
I've watched several of these episodes and they all end badly. I wonder who could look forward to watching each new show (back when it first aired) knowing it would be about those poor guys dying, mostly because of a torpedo or boat malfunction instead of enemy action. Damn...
As one of my Black Hats said, "any damn fool can jump out of an airplane once. It takes real balls to get back on a plane and do it again." Ed Lawton (no relation) had real balls to accept his reassignment while knowing what he was in for.
WAIT...DON'T LEAVE...I WILL SWIM OUT...WORLD'S WORST SEA RESCUE IN NAVAL HISTORY.
PLANE DROPS PADDLES TO DUMBBELLS ON THE HARDER.
